Career Academies

Career Academies prepare students for success in college and careers.  They accomplish this goal because they

  • maintain a rigorous academic standard
  • while fostering student enthusiam by linking the relevance of classroom learning to college and career goals

Los Angeles Unified School District is a nationwide model for the development of quality academies and the excellent results they can achieve (click here for newly published Academy Evaluation Study).  In partnership with local employers, LA Unified sponsors 63 Career Academies in 37 senior high schools (click here for LAUSD Academy Directory).  The intent is to make education more rigourous and relevant thereby preparing students for success in college and careers.

Most career academies have similar characteristics.  Each academy is a school-within-a-school that provides high school students with a three or four year program integrating academic learning with the study of a particular career path. LAUSD career fields include health and biotechnology, financial services, law and justice, telecommunication, travel and tourism, graphic arts, new media, performing arts, transportation, police and firefighting, fashion design and more.

There are three primary advantages to the Career Academy model. First, the school-within-a-school feature is designed to form closer bonds, and to create a strong peer group support system.  Many students describe their career academies as being like a family. Additionally, integrated academic and career curriculum brings rigor and relevance to the classroom.  Students learn best when course content is based on problem solving, real-life projects and hands-on learning opportunities.  The third advantage is the employer partnerships that are formed with the schools. These partnerships offer students opportunities to explore career options through job shadowing, internships, mentorships and a variety of creative integration methods.
