TIPS
Interview: The educator and
employer prepare for the visit by discussing their roles in advance. This preliminary conversation eliminates confusion and clarifies expectations.
Tour: The visitor should
receive a tour of the facility, as many departments and buildings as appropriate to understand the daily requirements and challenges.
Meet: The host should
introduce the visitor to key employees and be informative about roles and responsibilities as well as educational backgrounds.
Observe: The visitor should
be allowed to observe the host “in action” to gain an overall understanding of the practical application of their job.
Follow-up: Often these
partnerships blossom bacause educators see the practical application of their students efforts and employers learn firsthand about the demands of the modern classroom.

Educator/Employer Job Shadowing
Lasting partnerships are formed as Educators experience the dynamics of the workplace while employers return to school.
- Educators take their experience back to the classrooms and the students benefit
- Employers witness the educators’ dilemma of meeting competing demands with shrinking budgets
UNITE-LA hosts two campaigns that support educator/employer job shadowing experiences. Educators In The Workplace and Principal Executive For A Day both promote partnerships between educators
and employers.
Feedback from Principal/Executive for a Day participants is very positive. A high percentage of participants reenroll year after year
because of the value they receive from the shadow. Often the employer and educator develop a lasting relationship finding creative ways, such as guest speaking, career days, internships and
mentoring to improve students’ educational experience.
Review our brief list of supplemental resources that help facilitate the job shadow then enroll on-line to participate.
