TIPS

Schedule in advance to allow for busy work schedules.

Prior to the visit provide the speaker with information about the class, objectives to be accomplished by the visit and specific questions that students would like answered.

Prior to the visit provide students with background on the speaker and develop specific questions they will want to ask.

Encourage the students to write thank you letters to the speaker. This allows the teacher to connect the speaker’s key points to core curriculum. It also improves the students’ social and literacy skills.

Guest Speakers

Guest speakers can be an effective method of bringing workplace learning into the classroom at all grade levels.  Guest Speakers

  • bring a sense of legitimacy to classroom topics
  • help students understand the relevance of coursework
  • help students understand how work relates to personal development and the needs and functions of society

Check out our brief list of supplemental resources that help facilitate speaking engagements.

In the lower grade levels, parents make effective partners in introducing the world of work to students. Often the partnerships developed in Employer and Educator Job Shadowing result in Guest Speaking activities. Local Chambers of Commerce and Industry Councils are good resources for guest speakers from various career fields in the community.
