EMPLOYER RESPONSIBILITIES
It is very important that
the worksite supervisor, faculty and student all participate in the development of the objectives then join in a thorough review and evaluation of the outcome of the
internship.
Engage participating
staff members prior to experience by briefing them about their role and the objectives of the student internship
Prepare in advance by
assigning the student to key individual(s), developing an orientation plan and creating a schedule designating meetings to review progress, answer questions and provide
support or assistance.
Evaluate progress by
means of a checklist at midterm and the end of the term.
Provide and maintain time sheets
documenting student time in training.
The student should not
work holidays, overtime or displace any currently employed workers.
The related faculty
member should be able to visit the worksite at any time.

Student Internships
Student Internships provide work experience as part of a career preparation program. Internship programs provide the opportunity
- for students to apply theoretical principles from the classroom into the real-world environment
- to determine if additional study is needed by the student
- to identify any strengths or weaknesses in the classroom experience
UNITE-LA participates in the statewide summer campaign, California Intern Summer. Although we encourage and support year
around internships, Intern Summer is an opportunity to concentrate partnership efforts to increase student employer matches. Teachers or students click here to apply on-line for an internship opportunity. Employers click here to
be contacted about possible internship opportunities. Check out our brief list of supplemental resources that help facilitate the internship.
The value of internships as a teaching method lies in experiential opportunity. Internships are short-term and are most often
non-paid. They offer students an opportunity to function in professional work situations, rather than simulations.
The internship experience involves a variety of tasks to provide the intern with a vision of the many skills necessary to pursue a given career
path. The intern also observes the dynamics of a business setting and related supporting career fields. Additionally, internships expose the student to potential employment
opportunities.
Is is very important that faculty, student and worksite supervisor all participate in the development of the objectives for the
experience. Equally important is a thorough review and evaluation of the outcome of the internship. Objectives for the internship may
be generic or specific, dependent on the individual internship. However, in either case, employability skills should be emphasized in the objectives, action and evaluation phases.
Worksite supervisors are key to the success of an internship program. It is the worksite supervisor who directly supervises the
student at work and who is responsible for creating a successful learning experience. They help the intern understand the resources, information, systems and technology available at the
worksite and teach the student interpersonal skills and worker responsibilities.
The roles and responsibilities of the employer must be stressed. Employers must be genuinely committed to the educational
process and willing to provide meaningful work experience for students. Internships must not be viewed as an opportunity to gain free labor.
