STATE SUPERINTENDENT’S HIGH SCHOOL SUMMIT 2004:
HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL STUDENTS

The State Superintendent’s High School Summit is an opportunity for participants to discuss how to raise expectations for all students by providing a rigorous and relevant standards-based curriculum. On leaving the summit, participants will have received information about and have had the opportunity to discuss:

  • State Superintendent Jack O’Connell’s High Performing High Schools Initiative
  • The most recent research about high-achieving high schools
  • Promising practices of high schools that have obtained excellent results

The Summit will offer a rich array of more than 100 workshops organized around five essential strands:

  • Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
  • Leadership
  • Professional Learning Communities
  • Intervention and Support Services for Students
  • Structure, Size, and Time

The State Superintendent’s High School Summit 2004 will be an extraordinary opportunity to ensure that Small Learning Communities continue to be an important policy and priority for statewide education reform efforts.

SCHOOL REDESIGN NETWORK SMALL SCHOOLS STUDY TOURS
October 3-8 & December 5-10, 2004
New York, NY

The School Redesign Network (SRN), based at Stanford University, is pleased to announce its Fall 2004 Small Schools Study Tours for school communities that are redesigning large schools or creating  and sustaining small schools.

Building on the success of more than a dozen previous SRN Small Schools Study Tours, these Study Tours will:

  • Explore design features of highly effective small schools through two day visits to both Landmark & International High Schools in New York City.
  • Visit Julia Richman Education Complex, a formerly failing comprehensive high school that today thrives as a complex of autonomous small schools.
  • Engage in conversations with national small school leaders.

LEADERSHIP STUDY TOURS TO NEW YORK CITY
October 17-20, 2004

The Stanford Educational Leadership Institute (SELI) and the School Redesign Network (SRN) are pleased to announce a Leadership Study Tour for district-level leaders interested in redesigning large schools and creating and sustaining good small schools. Building on the success of more than a dozen SRN Small Schools Study Tours and a pilot Leadership Study Tour (LST) this past spring, the LST will be held in New York City from October 17-20, 2004. Participants will:

  • Explore the design features of highly effective small schools.
  • Visit the Julia Richman Education Complex, a formerly failing comprehensive high school that today thrives as a complex of autonomous small schools.
  • Consider the district role and the role of intermediary organizations in creating and sustaining such schools.

FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL REFORM
October 15-16, 2004
Palm Springs, CA

This Forum for High School Reform will feature the exemplary work of schools, teachers, and administrators in Smaller Learning Communities (SLC) and other high school reform models. Teams of high school teachers, administrators, counselors and students are invited to attend to learn more about the critical elements of SLC: autonomy, identity, instructional focus (support for teaching and learning), personalization, and accountability for measuring student progress.

The conference will provide inspiring keynote speakers, who will discuss their visions of high schools preparing students for the 21st Century. Partitioners will share experiences, strategies & challenges in transforming high school.

SMALLER LEARNING COMMUNITIES
DESIGN STUDIO WORKSHOPS
Oct. 20 - 22
Irvington HS, Fremont, CA

(Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, NWREL, and hosting SLC schools)

Design Studio Workshops are professional development opportunities for teams of staff members from large high schools implementing SLCs to observe key elements of SLCs in action at exemplary SLC high schools.

Team members benefit from hands-on activities, action planning, observations of classes, interviews with working staff members, networking with other SLC high schools, and understanding the struggles and successes of the SLC implementation process.

Costs vary depending on the length of the Design Studio, but typically run $1375 for a team of five, with additional team participants at $300 each.
