OBJECTIVES
L.A. Youth at Work [LAYAW]:
L.A. Youth at Work is an affiliate of UNITE-LA and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce that prepares youth for entry level employment in a three step process of skills training, a mock application process with certification to industry defined standards, and hiring events where local employers meet these pre-screened applicants. LAYAW offers Job Skills Workshops [JSW], implements the Work Readiness Certification Program [WRC], direct youth to hiring events, and assists in securing job pledges. LAYAW leverages the resources of the City of Los Angeles, the Mayor’s Office, and the L. A. AreaChamber of Commerce, who are all committed to sustaining significant employer partnerships that result in employment opportunities for deserving youth, and ensuring Los Angeles continues building a productive 21st century workforce.
•Job Skills Training [JSW] - Rigorous, one-day workshops for youth ages 16-24 led by volunteer business professionals.
•Work Readiness Certification [WRC] - A process to help companies screen for entry-level employees, increasing youth access to jobs. The WRC is a portable credential that verifies an applicant’s mastery of entry-level core competencies and basic skills necessary to obtain and retain employment as defined by the employer, the foundation of the certification process ia a simulation of the interview and hiring process that is consistent with employers’ expectations and identifies a youth’s level of employment preparation.
•Job Development - A series of events designed to advocate for and cultivate employment opportunities and work experiences for youth.
HIRE LA’s Youth:
For a fourth consecutive year, UNITE-LA, LAYAW and the L.A. Area Chamber have partnered with HIRE LA’s Youth, a campaign led by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa that connects L.A. youth to more than 15,000 jobs. The HIRE LA’s Youth campaign, with support from CDD, the L.A. WIB, and United Way of Greater Los Angeles, is a commitment from Los Angeles employers to hire youth year-round.
