Grounded in needs assessments shaped by Community Schools students, families and educators, UNITE-LA elevated community-defined priorities for student well-being—including access and expansion of vision and dental care, and dedicated supports for foster and homeless student needs.
In response, UNITE-LA launched the Alliance for Opportunity committee to strengthen LAUSD's cross-department coordination and ensure targeted initiatives—such as vision fairs, clothing boutiques, pilot laundry trucks and specialized counselor support—are visible and accessible across LAUSD's Community Schools Initiative. UNITE-LA also collaborated with LAUSD Student Medical Services to establish two new vision and dental partnerships and strengthen outreach for their expanded Saturday Vision Fairs. For the first time, CSI schools received coordinated, targeted outreach about available district services, resulting in increased participation by CSI students and families in vision care and other high-need services they directly identified. This laid the groundwork for a more coordinated and timely service delivery model that can respond to student needs in real time.
