State Board of Education Approves New Groundbreaking School Accountability System

A recent editorial gave a critical review of the upcoming changes to the Los Angeles public school accountability system. I believe it is an unfair look at a very promising tool.

Instead of a single score number under the old system, the new model will use a variety of measures that rate overall school and district performance. Imagine your car’s dashboard – a clear indicator of all items that will make your car run smoothly and safely. Likewise, this dashboard for schools will allow individuals to see the complete picture of a school and make determinations based on what matters to them.

UNITE-LA President David Rattray joined Los Angeles Unified School District's Superintendent Michelle King, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education, James Cole Jr., School Board President Steve Zimmer, other school representatives and students Tuesday morning to kick off the start of the 2016-2017 school year. 

LAUSD Superintendent Michele King made a stop at the L.A. Chamber on Wednesday, March 23, as part of her "Listen and Learn Tour" engaging school, community, and civic stakeholders in the development of LAUSD's Strategic Plan.

"Early literacy is one of the biggest priorities I have....Our objective is to educate our kids early on, and have parents understand that value", King was quoted as saying.
