At a recent internal meeting, we had the privilege of UNITE-LA board member, Angelica Salas, speaking to all of our staff about her work and the work of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), where she serves as their Executive Director. It reminded us how lucky we are to have her serve on our board, and how fortunate Los Angeles and the country are to have this social justice warrior. Under Angelica’s leadership, CHIRLA is a fierce advocate for human and civil rights of immigrants and refugees. UNITE-LA has had the privilege of working with CHIRLA on various issues related to immigration, including DACA and the Dream Act. So, when we recently saw U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ social media with Angelica and her team sitting in VP Harris’ office to address the need for Congress to immediately protect DACA, we weren’t surprised. We were proud. And more than that, we were grateful.
