UNITE-LA is pleased to report significant momentum in our advocacy efforts: two co-sponsored bills have advanced beyond their house of origin and will continue through the State Legislature, while one of our key budget priorities received increased funding in the Governor’s May Revision.

AB 805 (Fong) - Career Apprenticeship Bridge Program

AB 805 (Fong) is jointly sponsored by the California Opportunity Youth Network, the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, UNITE-LA and Youth Will.

This bill would establish the Career Apprenticeship Bridge (CAB) Program to strengthen and expand youth apprenticeship opportunities across California. The CAB program, which was one of the key recommendations of the 2025 California Youth Apprenticeship Committee report, formally connects high school career and technical education programs with the apprenticeship system, establishing seamless pathways for youth into apprenticeship opportunities.

SB 1054 (Cabaldon) - Better Data, Better Coverage, Better California

SB 1054 is a response to the federal H.R. 1, which directs the Employment Development Department to collect hours worked and occupation information from employers through wage filings to make automatic benefit eligibility determinations under new federal SNAP and Medicaid rules. It is estimated that approximately 665,000 people could lose their CalFresh monthly benefits, and up to 3 million people will lose Medi-Cal coverage, under the new requirements if California does not identify a solution.

SB 1054 passed in the Assembly Insurance committee on Wednesday, June 17.

Support Funding for Child Care Infrastructure

UNITE-LA supported the preservation of a proposed $11.5 million one-time investment in child care infrastructure for communities impacted by recent fires, as included in the Governor's January 2026 budget proposal. We welcomed the increase to $11.8 million in the Governor's May Revision and will continue advocating to ensure this enhanced investment remains in the final budget.
