UNITE-LA COMMENDS LAUSD BOARD FOR CHOOSING NEXT SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT

Miami-Dade County School Leader with Tremendous Public School Success to Head LAUSD

LOS ANGELES - Today, the Los Angeles Unified School District's (LAUSD) board of education announced the appointment of the former head of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Alberto Carvalho, as the new superintendent. The following is a statement from David Rattray, President and CEO of UNITE-LA, on that appointment.

"UNITE-LA resoundingly applauds Alberto Carvalho as being chosen to serve as Superintendent of LAUSD. His leadership and successes in his role as Superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools are nationally known and admired," said Rattray. "We want to thank the LAUSD Board for working together to find the best candidate to lead the second largest public school system in the country. We know the challenges, particularly at this critical time as we all recover from the impacts of the pandemic. As such, UNITE-LA pledges its support in ensuring Mr. Carvalho has a successful, long tenure and reaches our shared goals related to early care and education, high school graduation, college access and success, and career readiness."

Rattray added, "Additionally, as convener of the L.A. Compact, UNITE- LA anticipates strong support for the new Superintendent among education, government, business and labor, and civic organizations in Los Angeles that are working jointly to improve cradle-to-career student outcomes. The collaboration of these leaders on behalf of all LAUSD students, with explicit commitment to equity for historically marginalized communities and populations, will further strengthen the new leadership at LAUSD."
