UNITE-LA is a co-sponsor of AB 1746, the Cal Grant Reform Act. This bill is intended to modernize the Cal Grant, a statewide financial aid program, with an equity framework. The Cal Grant impacts hundreds of thousands of students each year and this policy change would open the opportunity to even more students who would classify as our most deserving of state funds. After two long fought years (including a veto by the Governor in 2021), Cal Grant reform had its biggest success and in July, was codified in the 2022-23 state budget to be implemented in 2024 along with a $500,000 allocation to the California Student Aid Commission to start preparing for the roll out.
