In August, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors (BOS) approved an unprecedented $187.7 million spending package to advance Los Angeles County's "care first, jails last" vision with a series of direct community investments and funding for alternatives to incarceration—accelerating the process of creating a more just and equitable L.A. County for all residents. Although an L.A. Superior Court judge ruled Measure J unconstitutional, the BOS had ultimate discretion whether or not they took the Measure J Re-Imagine LA Advisory Committee’s recommendations for the first year of funding. The BOS also approved to rename the Measure J Re-Imagine LA Advisory Committee to the Care First and Community Investment Advisory Committee to make sure there are no legal challenges in the future against this work moving forward.
