UNITE-LA Today: Foster Youth College Access Mentoring Program Launch

UNITE-LA is launching a new mentoring pilot for 12th-grade foster youth in partnership with United Friends of the Children. Four college-going foster youth mentors are being trained to provide one-on-one support throughout the academic year, helping students navigate college planning, financial aid and key decisions on the path to postsecondary education.

Mentors will meet with students monthly using a strengths-based, culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach to build confidence and help students stay on track toward their college goals.

The program aims to strengthen college access, persistence and postsecondary success through a trusted support network grounded in shared experience while investing in the leadership of young people serving as mentors. Mentees who submit their financial aid application and complete the program will receive a $1,000 stipend and have the opportunity to win an additional $1,000 through UNITE-LA’s scholarship drawing.

Applications are open for 12th-grade foster youth. See the program flyer for more information and share it with eligible students and school partners. Contact Aaliyah Hernandez at [email protected] for more information.
