UNITE-LA Today: Linked Learning Love

Last month, several members of UNITE-LA’s Programs and Systems-Change teams attended the annual Linked Learning Conference, hosted in downtown L.A.

Keynote speakers and workshops addressed the path to Linked Learning pathway certification; best practices in dual enrollment and work-based learning; high-quality, career-connected instruction; and the science of adolescent development. LAUSD school and district leaders showed up in force – showcasing the tremendous progress the district has made in expanding Linked Learning pathways over the past 10-15 years, much of which has been championed by UNITE-LA.

In 2008, an essay by our retired founder, David Rattray, was included in a seminal book called “Beyond Tracking: Multiple Pathways to College, Career & Civic Participation,” co-authored by Jeannie Oakes (then at the Ford Foundation) and Marisa Saunders (who now heads up UCLA’s Center for Community Schools). Many in the Linked Learning field point to this book as critical to the launch of the Linked Learning movement.
