UNITE-LA Today: UNITE-LA Sacramento Advocacy Trip

On April 30, UNITE-LA's president, Alysia Bell, and staff members, Sonia Campos-Rivera, senior vice president, Policy and Public Affairs; Kelly Reynolds, director, Education and Workforce Strategy & Policy; and Adam Gottlieb, director, Postsecondary Strategy & Policy, traveled to the state Capitol for a day of meetings with legislative staff and state agency partners. The purpose of the trip was to elevate UNITE-LA's work and key state policy priorities, including advocacy for our co-sponsored bills AB 753 and SB 590 and a budget request that extends the work of the L.A. Region K-16 Collaborative. In building relationships with staffers across legislative offices and committees, the UNITE-LA team was also able to showcase work advancing economic mobility in the L.A. region and across the state via our partnerships with business organizations. Conversations elevated UNITE-LA's programmatic and systems work and uplifted the need to support early care and education and intersegmental connectivity between K-12, higher education and workforce.

The Digital Equity Team, including UNITE-LA Executive Vice President Amy Cortina and Liliana Aide Monge, director of Digital Equity, were also in Sacramento to elevate UNITE-LA's digital equity work and key state policy priorities, including advocacy for various bills such as AB 353 and AB 1271. The trip was led by the statewide digital equity coalition, California Alliance for Digital Equity (CADE), and the L.A. coalition, Digital Equity LA, and brought approximately 90 people to advocate for digital equity and digital opportunities throughout California to further develop affordable broadband options and high-quality broadband access.
