UNITE-LA Applauds FCC’s Proposal to Amend E-rate Program Amid Connectivity Crisis

California is making unprecedented investments in work-based learning programs through initiatives like the Golden State Pathways Program, regional K-16 collaboratives and Gov. Newsom’s Master Plan for Career Education.

• $137 million will be awarded to L.A. County schools through the Golden State Pathways Program, totaling nearly one-third of the $470 million allocated statewide.
• $250 million in regional K-16 collaboratives across the state is helping leaders streamline coordination among K-12 schools, community colleges and four-year universities, including $18 million awarded to the L.A. Region K-16 Collaborative.
• By fall 2024, California will finalize the Master Plan for Career Education, aiming to develop a blueprint for equitable access to fulfilling, living-wage jobs for all Californians.

As the state and our region look to expand high-quality, work-based learning for young people, UNITE-LA is thrilled to highlight Kaiser Permanente as a true champion of work-based learning, particularly through their innovative internship program for high school students.

UNITE-LA congratulates California Forward (CA FWD) for naming Kate Gordon as its new CEO. We look forward to partnering closely with Gordon, as UNITE-LA continues its work with CA FWD and its affiliate, the California Stewardship Network (CSN).

UNITE-LA has partnered with the California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Digital Equity Project, funded by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, to enhance digital access for participants enrolled in our Step into Tech, My Pathway to Health and LA Regional Cleantech Career Academy programs.

In May, UNITE-LA’s Youth Engagement Team facilitated mock interviews for Bravo Medical Magnet High School and La Serna High School.

On April 25, UNITE-LA hosted “Tech Talk,” the last session of Part 1 of our fifth Step into Tech cohort, with 17 graduates.

In mid-May, UNITE-LA’s Programs Team hosted its Summer Open House for 40 partners, including LAUSD, DCFS, Goodwill SoCal, Antioch University, the L.A. County Probation Department and others.

At the end of May, UNITE-LA was present for California Workforce Association’s Spring Workforce Practitioners conference, WORKCON. The event benefits those interested in helping people obtain sustainable employment.
